Winter can be brutal on your skin – even if it’s not exposed to the elements! Drying effects from heated indoor air as well as the cold outdoor exposure can cause damage and premature aging.
Check out this short but important list of ways to save and care for your skin throughout the winter months.
- Use a humidifier during the winter months. This can help offset the drying effect of heated indoor air and help your skin retain moisture.
- Showering strips away naturally occuring oils on your skin. Keep the temperature of your shower lukewarm rather than hot to retain some of the oil your skin needs to stay healthy.
- Use moisturizing or soap free cleansers on your body and face. Be extra gentle when cleansing by using soft sponges or cleansing cloths. Make sure you pat or blot your skin dry. Rubbing vigorously can damage your skin.
- After showering, washing your face or hands, apply moisturizing lotions to help seal in the moisture left on your skin. Consider using creams instead of lotions during the winter months for an extra boost of emollient protection.
- Don’t forget the sunscreen! What? In winter? Oh yes! Winter sun (and reflection off snow) can be just as damaging as summer rays! Always protect your exposed skin by using sunscreen daily and especially if you are headed to the slopes or any outdoor activity. And don’t forget to reapply if you are spending extended time outdoors.
Remember, love the skin you’re in and follow these tips to help save and protect the largest organ on the body… your skin!
