Superfoods for a healthy diet“Let food be thy medicine & let thy medicine be food” – Hippocrates.

We all know it’s important to eat right. But what does that mean on a daily basis in our fast food, high impact, high stress world? Is it enough to have a salad for lunch? Does choosing a bagel rather than a donut mean I’m making the right choices?

We all make food choices every time we eat. We choose what to put into our bodies. I’m not going to argue against the occasional treat. There are too many of my friends who would call me a hypocrite if I did. But what I am going to advocate is conscious eating, Make sure when you choose a treat, that you’re making that decision consciously rather than just because the item is in front of you.

Conscious eating means you know and acknowledge what is going into your body and why you’re making the choice you make. It requires that you know a little bit about the foods you eat. We all know that it’s good to eat fruits nuts and vegetables and protein, but do you know that not all vegetables are created equal?

This brings me to the topic of superfoods. Superfoods are foods that are purported to contain properties that are ‘super’ beneficial to our bodies. They are said to lower cholesterol, reduce the risk of cancer and promote good health. You can find an article on superfoods and a list of the top ten at Web MD. Here’s the link:

In addition, supplements can be a valuable addition to your diet.  When shopping for supplements look for those packed with antioxidants, phytonutrients, Omega 3s and other health supporting ingredients.

And remember, if you’re choosing between berries or ice cream, how about berries AND ice cream.
