Eye healthIn keeping with the theme of healthy anti-aging, let’s talk about eye health and your vision.

Obviously, the eyes are important to the sense of sight. Duh right? But did you know there are a number of things you can do to keep your eyes healthy? The eyes, like any organ in the body, need exercise and nutrition to keep them healthy.

Take computer work for instance. Did you know there are exercises you can do to help reduce and relieve eye strain related to use of the computer? Every 20 minutes, rest your eyes by looking 20 feet away for 20 seconds. At least every two hours, get up and take a 15-minute break.

Protecting your eyes from the damaging effects of the sun is just as important as protecting your skin.  If you wear prescription lenses opt for a UV coating when purchasing.  Consider buying prescription sunglasses if your budget allows.  You can also opt for sunglass “clip-ons” (very fashion trendy).  Wear a wide-brimmed hat to provide additional sun protection for your eyes and the skin of your face, neck, and head.

Here’s an article at WebMD that focuses on specific things you can do to maintain, improve and protect your eyesight.

Nutritional supplements can be found with many of the nutrients cited in the article.

More than any other tissues in the body, the lens, and macula of the eye are continually subjected to free radical-producing factors, such as ultraviolet light. Due to this constant exposure, the eyes rely on a range of antioxidants to neutralize the damaging effects of free radicals. As the only carotenoids found in both the macula and the lens, lutein and zeaxanthin work together to filter damaging high-energy blue light. In the macula, lutein and zeaxanthin specialize in protecting different areas—lutein protects the outer region, while zeaxanthin protects the central region associated with highly acute vision. These two nutrients have been found to not only protect lens clarity and macular integrity, but also to help reduce glare sensitivity from outdoor activities, artificial indoor lighting, and computers. Light sensitivity affects many younger adults and may be a precursor to lens clarity issues.   Finding a supplement that provides lutein and zeaxanthin in the right combination and dose for clinically-relevant eye health benefits can help your chances of keeping your eyes healthy for your future.

We only have one set of eyes so let’s do our best to keep them healthy and our vision the best it can be!
