Hectic days and schedules take a toll on our mental and emotional health. Even the mundane activities of our days can take a toll when our daily pace is fast and furious with no time to “stop and smell the roses.” Making sure you get some “soul” food is as important as nourishment or exercise.
On top of the crazy busy pace of our lives, we often neglect the importance of “down time” because it can involve time (which we already don’t have enough of) and money. Nonetheless, it is as important to find moments to rest your brain, calm your emotions and give yourself a “mental health break” even if for a short while during your day.
Here is a list of pleasant, productive ways to take a pause, spend your free time and get a much-needed respite for your soul. Taking just a little bit of time to refresh during your day can make you healthier, happier, more productive and less stressful in the long run.
1. Reading
Reading can transport you away from the stressors of daily life. It can open up your mind to new ideas, fresh perspectives and inspire you to think “out-of-the-box”. Books, ebooks or audiobooks are all ways to grab just a little bit of time during your day to replenish your mind and soul.

2. Real conversations
With friends, co-workers, family, acquaintances or even a casual chat on a bus or subway, make your interactions meaningful. Show interest in subjects of conversation: career paths, family, travels, hobbies, and interests. You might be pleasantly surprised at what you can learn from and about another person.
3. Meditation
There is sitting meditation, walking meditation, sound meditation, meditation with a mantra, following the breath, focusing on thought content. Whatever form of meditation you choose the benefits span the gamut of health, beauty, general well being, calming, focus and more.

4. Yoga
Yoga is therapeutic for the mind, body, and soul. It relaxes the mind and rejuvenates the body while toning muscles and increasing flexibility. Some consider it a form of meditation as well. Find a class or learn on your own with instructional CDs or online lessons.
5. Walking stress away
Never underestimate the power of taking a walk. Get outdoors and breathe while you take in your surroundings. Free your mind from stressful thoughts and allow yourself to focus on the sky, birds, trees, or the hustle and bustle of the city around you. Wherever you are, take just a few minutes to stretch your legs and get a quick change of scenery.
Use one of the techniques listed above or change them up from day to day. You’ll probably find one that is your “go-to” activity and use it the most.
